“My job is to find solutions as a coach. Look at the NHL playoffs and how the goals are getting scored – you need to get your nose dirty in front of the net. I feel like our first two games we were playing around the net but we weren’t getting those dirty goals, but the players bought in and it worked collectively. In short-term tournaments you need to be engaged right away and win every game. In the third period, the Patriots came out strong; we had some lapses, and they are strong and fast and got right back in the game. I’m happy we found a way to win but we need to be more dialled in on those opportunities.”

“It was a close one. We definitely didn’t play our best in the defensive zone, but when we needed to shut it down we did and I think we can outscore any team here. “I’ll be honest, I woke up this morning thinking we’d need a 3-1 win (needing to score three goals) and that would be good enough to advance. I thought Toronto would rebound from their tough loss, do us a favour and beat [Longueuil] and if they would have we’d be advancing right now. Obviously after the 12 o’clock game we had to change our thought process, but we believed we could do it and we’ve scored four goals in the first period plenty of times throughout the year. We’re usually a team that can strike quickly and that didn’t happen. A lot of teams after hearing that they need to win by five goals would think that’s a pretty daunting task. Our staff went to work, prepared the guys as best they could and this group didn’t shy away from the pressure. It’s just amazing to see the heart and character in our group and I couldn’t ask for more.”

“We’re happy that we’re still alive. We’re playing really good teams here and Flin Flon is really good. They are really well coached, hardworking and a really good team just like everyone is here, and we know we still have a big challenge ahead of us. We didn’t want to talk before the game about ’We can’t lose by this many,’ I didn’t want that in their heads so we just focused on trying to win the game, but at some point I had to say ’We have to be sure we don’t lose by this amount’ just to create a little more urgency. I’m proud of the way we finished out the third period; we played a really good hockey team, so it was a tough night.”

« En tant qu’entraîneur, mon travail consiste à trouver des solutions. Il suffit de regarder les séries éliminatoires de la LNH et de voir comment les buts sont marqués. Il faut être prêt à payer le prix devant le filet. Lors de nos deux premiers matchs, nos jeux se passaient autour du filet, mais nous ne marquions pas de but en nous sacrifiant. Les joueurs ont accepté notre plan, et ça a fonctionné collectivement. Dans un tournoi de courte durée, ça prend l’engagement de tout le monde dès le départ et il faut gagner. En troisième période, les Patriots sont sortis en force; nous avons eu quelques ratées. Ils sont forts et rapides et ont trouvé le moyen de revenir dans le match. Je suis content qu’on ait réussi à l’emporter, mais nous devons avoir une meilleure exécution dans ces occasions. »

« C’était un match serré. Nous n’avons certainement pas joué notre meilleur match en zone défensive, mais lorsque nous devions fermer le jeu, nous l’avons fait, et je pense que nous pouvons battre n’importe quelle équipe ici. Nous pouvons encore peaufiner notre jeu dans notre territoire; je ne pense pas que nous avons déjà accordé six buts dans un même match cette saison, donc si nous pouvons améliorer cet aspect lors des deux prochains duels, je pense que nous avons de bonnes chances de gagner. »

« Je vais être honnête, je me suis levé ce matin en me disant que nous aurions besoin d’une victoire de 3-1 (qu’il faudrait marquer trois buts) et que ce serait suffisant pour passer au tour suivant. Je pensais que Toronto allait rebondir et battre Longueuil après un revers difficile et que ça nous ferait une faveur. Si ce scénario s’était concrétisé, nous aurions avancé à la prochaine étape. Après le match de midi, nous avons dû changer notre façon de voir tout ça, mais nous avions confiance en nos moyens. Nous avions marqué quatre buts en première période plusieurs fois au cours de l’année. Nous arrivons habituellement à frapper rapidement, mais ça n’a pas fonctionné aujourd’hui. Plusieurs équipes penseraient que gagner par cinq buts serait une tâche ardue. Nos membres du personnel se sont mis au travail, ont préparé les gars du mieux qu’ils ont pu, et ce groupe n’a pas reculé devant la pression. C’est incroyable de voir à quel point notre équipe a du cœur et du caractère, je n’aurais pu demander mieux. »

« Nous sommes heureux d’être encore en vie à ce tournoi. Nous jouons contre de très bonnes équipes ici, et Flin Flon en est une très bonne. C’est une équipe très bien dirigée, qui travaille fort et qui est très bonne, comme toutes les équipes ici, et nous savons que nous avons encore un grand défi à relever. Avant le match, nous ne voulions pas parler des détails au sujet du nombre de buts d’écart qu’il nous fallait éviter en cas de défaite. Je ne voulais pas que nos joueurs pensent à ça, donc nous nous sommes seulement concentrés sur la victoire, mais à un certain moment dans le match, il a fallu que je leur en parle pour créer un certain sentiment d’urgence. Je suis fier de la façon dont nous avons conclu la troisième période; nous avons affronté un excellent club, donc c’était une soirée difficile. »
