Maritime Junior Hockey League: Commissioner

The Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) is the governing organization for Junior A hockey throughout the Maritimes operating within the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

The League is comprised of twelve franchises located in Edmundston, Campbellton, Grand Falls, Miramichi, Fredericton, West Kent, Summerside, Amherst, Pictou County, Truro, Valley and Yarmouth.

The League is currently searching for a Commissioner to lead us into the future by navigating the changing Junior hockey landscape while embracing development, innovation, and advancement.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Commissioner is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Maritime Junior Hockey League and is accountable to the Board of Governors. Reporting to the Management Committee, the Commissioner is responsible for the following:

Lead and facilitate positive relations and communication within the Board of Governors

Lead, administer and maintain positive relations with the League’s member teams

Manage and administer the financial operations of the League

Represent the Maritime Junior Hockey League at the Canadian Junior Hockey League

Maintain positive relations and communication with external governing bodies and
organizations

Oversee the operations of the League and manage the League’s human resources; and Lead, administer and coordinate the administrative operational requirements and
activities of the League.

The Maritime Junior Hockey League is seeking a Commissioner who is a forward-thinking individual to present the League as a viable option to partners, community members and players.

The candidate shall possess the following attributes:

Self-starter, dependable and capable of performing under pressure

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present ideas and
information clearly and in a highly professional manner

Strong leadership, motivational and organizational skills for working in a busy “team”
environment and manage multiple competing priorities

Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to positively and diplomatically
communicate and interact with volunteers, members, sponsors, media, board members,
staff and the general public

Ability to work independently on various, complex tasks and projects and meet various
deadlines; and ability to analyze various policies, regulations, procedures and proposals to effectively implement and communicate all related requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate shall possess the following:

Post-secondary education in business, sports administration or equivalent experience in related field

Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a leadership role in the sport of hockey or
equivalent

Experience with organizational financial planning and budget tracking

Experience is managing and supervising personnel

Proficient computer skills

Familiarity with financial management tools (e.g. QuickBooks)

The ability to comply with the Hockey Nova Scotia Criminal Record (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Checks (VSC) requirements

A strong knowledge of the Maritime Junior Hockey League’s structure and programs is considered an asset

Experience in team management at the junior level is considered an asset

Superior English language skills required (written and verbal). Fluency in French (written and verbal) is considered an asset

Residence within the Maritime provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island) or willingness to relocate; and References are required.
