TORONTO – The Canadian Junior Hockey League announced Tuesday the appointment of François Fortin as its referee-in-chief, with the assignment of representing the CJHL as an officiating coach at the 2023 Centennial Cup, Canadian National Jr. A Championship, May 11-21, in Portage la Prairie, Man.
A veteran official with over 30-plus years of officiating experience, Fortin brings a wealth of on and off-ice knowledge into the position.
As a resident of Levis, Que., Fortin currently serves as the chief officiating supervisor for the CJHL-member, the Quebec AAA Junior Hockey League, and refereed at the CJHL and USPORTS levels for 18 seasons, as well as 13 years in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
He also offers further experiences at a national and international level, having officiated games previously at the World Junior A Challenge and multiple USPORTS men’s hockey championships.
“François’ time in the game, along with his overall experiences both as a referee, and now as a supervisor, make him an ideal candidate to work with all of our selected officials who will be involved during the course of the Centennial Cup,” stated CJHL president Andy Harkness.
“We look forward to him to serving as an officiating coach on behalf of the CJHL as part of the team of qualified officials from the across the entire CJHL, who have earned the opportunity to be on the ice this May in Portage la Prairie,” added Harkness.
Hockey Canada manager of officiating, Dan Hanoomansingh, echoed the sentiments of Harkness in discussing Fortin’s appointment.
“The knowledge and experience that François has attained over his tenure as a game official puts him in good stead as the CJHL’s referee-in-chief and to be an officiating coach at the Centennial Cup,” stated Hanoomansingh.
He went on to add: “As an officiating supervisor at the provincial level with Hockey Quebec and LHJAAAQ, and having worked alongside a multitude of officials over the years brings with it an invaluable asset that will provide a certain quality and consistency in his role at the National Junior A Championship.”
Among Fortin’s duties leading up to, and during, the 10-team event include:
• Sitting on the committee for the selection of the referees and linespersons who will officiate during the Centennial Cup.
• While in attendance at the National Junior A Championship, serve as part of a three-person officiating coach/supervisor group during scheduled games throughout the event.
• Sit on the 2023 Centennial Cup disciplinary committee.
For his part, Fortin looks forward to being part of the 10-team event that will feature the respective CJHL member-league champions and the host Portage Terriers (MJHL).

La LHJC nomme François Fortin arbitre en chef
TORONTO – La Ligue de hockey junior canadienne a annoncé mardi la nomination de François Fortin au poste d’arbitre en chef. Il aura pour mission de représenter la LHJC à titre de superviseur des officiels lors de la Coupe du Centenaire 2023, soit le Championnat national junior A du Canada, qui aura lieu du 11 au 21 mai à Portage la Prairie, au Manitoba.
Officiel expérimenté comptant plus de 30 ans d’expérience, M. Fortin apporte à ce poste un bagage de connaissances exceptionnelles, tant sur la glace qu’à l’extérieur.
Résident de Lévis, au Québec, M. Fortin est actuellement superviseur en chef des officiels pour la Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Québec, organisme membre de la LHJC. Il a arbitré pendant 18 saisons dans la LHJC et au sein de U SPORTS, ainsi que pendant 13 ans dans la Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec.
Il possède également une expérience supplémentaire aux niveaux national et international, ayant déjà arbitré des matchs lors du Défi mondial junior A et de plusieurs championnats U SPORTS de hockey masculin.
« Le temps que François a consacré au jeu, combiné à son expérience cumulative en tant qu’arbitre et maintenant en tant que superviseur, font de lui le candidat idéal pour travailler avec tous les officiels sélectionnés qui travailleront dans le cadre de la Coupe du Centenaire », explique Andy Harkness, président de la LHJC.
« Nous avons hâte qu’il agisse à titre d’entraîneur des officiels au nom de la LHJC à titre de membre de l’équipe d’officiels qualifiés de toute la LHJC, qui ont mérité l’occasion d’être sur la glace en mai prochain à Portage la Prairie », ajoute M. Harkness.
Le directeur des officiels de Hockey Canada, Dan Hanoomansingh, fait écho aux sentiments de M. Harkness en parlant de la nomination de M. Fortin.
« Les connaissances et l’expérience que François a acquises au cours de sa carrière d’officiel de match le mettent en bonne position pour devenir l’arbitre en chef de la LHJC et pour être entraîneur des officiels à la Coupe du Centenaire », affirme M. Hanoomansingh.
« En tant que superviseur des officiels au niveau provincial avec Hockey Québec et la LHJAAAQ, et ayant travaillé aux côtés d’une multitude d’officiels au fil des ans, il possède un atout précieux qui lui permettra d’assurer une certaine qualité et une certaine constance dans son rôle au Championnat national junior A », ajoute-t-il.
Les tâches de M. Fortin avant et pendant l’événement rassemblant dix équipes incluent notamment :
• siéger au comité de sélection des arbitres et des juges de ligne qui arbitreront lors de la Coupe du Centenaire;
• dans le cadre du Championnat national junior A, faire partie d’un groupe de trois entraîneurs et superviseurs des officiels pour les matchs prévus tout au long de l’événement;
• siéger au comité disciplinaire de la Coupe du Centenaire 2023.
Pour sa part, M. Fortin est impatient de faire partie de l’événement qui réunira les 10 équipes championnes des ligues membres de la LHJC et le club hôte, les Terriers de Portage (LHJM).
« C’est un grand honneur pour moi d’avoir été choisi comme arbitre en chef de la LHJC et, parallèlement, d’avoir l’occasion de participer à la Coupe du Centenaire et de travailler avec Hockey Canada, la LHJC et toute notre équipe d’officiels. Je suis vraiment enthousiaste et j’y consacrerai tout mon cœur. »
