VANCOUVER, B.C. – The 2019 National Hockey League Draft in Vancouver, B.C., came to a close Saturday and at the conclusion of the two-day event, a total of 11 Canadian Junior Hockey League players were among those selected.
Friday saw Alex Newhook of the Victoria Grizzlies (BCHL) being the highest CJHL player taken, going in the first round, 16th overall, to the Colorado Avalanche.
He thus earned the CJHL’s John Grisdale Top Prospect Award in the process in being the first CJHL player taken in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Next to go was Newhook’s fellow Victoria teammate Alexander Campbell as the left winger was tabbed in the third round, 65th overall, by the Nashville Predators.
Two other CJHLers were drafted in the third round as well in Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL) defenceman Layton Ahac and Okotoks Oilers (AJHL) left winger Quinn Olson, who were taken by the Vegas Golden Knights and Boston Bruins 86th and 92nd respectively.
The lone CJHL player chosen in the fourth round was Victoria Grizzlies (BCHL) blueliner Carter Berger, 106th overall, by the Florida Panthers.
Using the 134th selection, the Winnipeg Jets claimed Chilliwack Chiefs (BCHL) centre Harrison Blaisdell in the fifth round.
Just 10 picks later, Winnipeg used another fifth round choice to draft Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL) goaltender Logan Neaton.
Next to go was Chilliwack Chiefs (BCHL) right wing Kevin Wall, who was selected in the sixth round, 181st overall, by the Carolina Hurricanes.
The second CJHL goalkeeper to be picked was Carter Gylander of the Sherwood Park Crusaders (AJHL), taken by the Detroit Red Wings in the seventh round, 191st overall.
Other players from the CJHL taken in the seventh and final round of the 2019 NHL Draft were right wing Eric Ciccolini (205th overall) of the Toronto Jr. Canadiens (OJHL), who was selected by the New York Rangers while Massimo Rizzo of the Penticton Vees (BCHL) rounded out the group when he was drafted by Carolina in 216th spot.
