Vernon Vipers Victorious in Doyle Cup
Sunday, April 24, 2011
The two-time defending BCHL national champions Vernon Vipers have earned a chance to defend their title once again.
The Vipers edged out the Spruce Grove Saints in a 4-2 victory Sunday night to win the Doyle Cup.
It was a deja vu ending for the Cup champs as they pushed the host and AJHL champion Saints all the way to a seven game series before coming out on top.
David Robinson deked in the third period winner with less the seven minutes left in the game.
With 20 seconds left, Adam Thompson fired in a 180 foot empty netter to secure the win for the Vipers.
The Saints outshot the Vipers 31-28 but couldn't hold out for a win.
Nearly 1,300 fans packed the Grant Fuhr arena to watch history made as Vernon clinched their third Doyle Cup.
The win earns the Vipers a spot back to the RBC Cup in Camrose, Alberta from April 30 to May 8, where they will attempt to go for three national championships in a row.
